Two Awards from Emerald Publishing Highlight Scientific Publishing Workshop

Universitas Gadjah Mada Library and Archives successfully organized a workshop titled Writing Impactful Abstracts & Understanding Publishing Ethics and Policies while also receiving two prestigious awards from Emerald Publishing on Thursday (April 23) at Alumni Corner, Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada.

The event drew significant attention as it not only equipped participants with effective abstract writing skills but also strengthened their understanding of publication ethics—two essential aspects of today’s research ecosystem.

The workshop featured William Loh, Customer Success Partner at Emerald Publishing, as the keynote speaker and was moderated by Irwan Sukardi, Business Manager Indonesia at Emerald Publishing. The event attracted strong enthusiasm, with more than 300 participants joining both online and offline.

The Head of Universitas Gadjah Mada Library and Archives, Arif Surachman, S.IP., MBA., officially opened the event and delivered welcoming remarks. In his speech, he emphasized the importance of collaboration between higher education institutions and global publishing partners in improving the quality of academic publications.

“We would like to express our gratitude for the collaboration established with Emerald Publishing. We hope that in the future, the academic community of Universitas Gadjah Mada will continue to contribute to strengthening academic culture and producing high-quality scientific publications,” he said.

William Loh delivered a session on strategies for writing concise, clear, and impactful abstracts. He explained that an abstract should effectively reflect the research objectives, methodology, key findings, and contributions in a concise manner to attract the attention of editors, reviewers, and readers. Participants also gained insights into selecting appropriate keywords, structuring effective abstracts, and adapting writing styles to meet journal standards.

In the following session, the speaker discussed publication ethics and policies, including the importance of originality, plagiarism prevention, authorship transparency, and understanding the peer-review process. William Loh also emphasized the importance of understanding publisher policies, copyright issues, and academic integrity principles to ensure that publications are not only high-quality but also ethical and responsible.

Another significant moment during the event was the presentation of two awards from Emerald Publishing to Universitas Gadjah Mada: the High Use Award and the High Research Award. These awards recognized the university’s extensive use of Emerald’s academic resources as well as its research contributions.

The awards were presented directly by Wan Yat Seng, Regional Director for East Asia at Emerald Publishing, to Arif Surachman, S.IP., MBA., Head of Universitas Gadjah Mada Library and Archives.

“This award motivates us to continue enhancing our contribution to the utilization of scientific information resources and the strengthening of academic publishing,” he said.

This achievement demonstrates that modern libraries are no longer merely spaces for storing books, but have evolved into centers for information literacy development, research support, and global collaboration networks.

The event also aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education through improving higher education quality and academic literacy, as well as SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through strategic collaboration between universities and international publishers.

Moving forward, the challenge for academia is not only to produce research, but also to ensure that research is well-written, ethically published, and generates meaningful impact for society. In this context, libraries are becoming increasingly strategic as bridges between knowledge and the future.
