Orientation for Part-Time Students: UGM Library and Archives Promote Professionalism and Service Ethics

The Library and Archives of Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) reaffirm their commitment to developing professional and competitive young human resources through an orientation program for part-time student workers. This activity serves as an initial step before students are directly involved in supporting library and archival services at UGM.

The orientation for part-time students was held in the Meeting Room of the UGM Library and Archives, 2nd floor, on Friday (30/1/2026). The event was opened with a welcoming address by the Head of the Library Division, Wahyu Supriyanto, S.E., M.Si., who emphasized the important role of part-time students as an integral part of UGM’s academic service ecosystem.

“Part-time students must be responsible for the duties entrusted to them and uphold ethical standards during their service, including wearing proper attire and applying the five principles: Smile, Greeting, Salute, Polite, and Courteous as a form of excellent service to visitors of the UGM Library and Archives,” said Wahyu Supriyanto in his remarks.

The activity was attended by part-time students who will be assigned to various units within the UGM Library and Archives. The orientation was conducted at the beginning of the assignment period to provide guidance on work agreements and implementation mechanisms, and to offer an open discussion forum for addressing students’ questions about their roles and responsibilities.

Following the briefing session, the activity continued with team assignments and placement at designated work locations for the duration of the part-time program. This step aims to ensure that students clearly understand their roles and are ready to contribute optimally to each unit’s needs.

The orientation concluded with a discussion session involving supervisors from public relations, library services, podcast services, archives, and processing units. During this session, students received technical guidance and a concrete overview of the strategic role of the UGM Library and Archives throughout the part-time work period.

This part-time student orientation activity is aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, which aims to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all. This alignment is reflected in the provision of practice-based learning, the strengthening of information literacy, and the development of ethical and professional skills that support students’ capacity building beyond the classroom. The activity also supports SDG 8: Decent Work and Economic Growth, which emphasizes the promotion of productive and decent employment opportunities for all. Through this part-time program, students gain structured, ethical, and educational work experience that equips them with professional competencies and readiness to enter the workforce.

Through the part-time program, the UGM Library and Archives not only provide opportunities for student contribution but also offer a meaningful learning platform beyond the classroom. Student involvement in service activities and information management is expected to enrich professional experience while equipping them with practical skills, professional work ethics, and an understanding of public service, preparing them for the world of work. In this way, the UGM Library and Archives continue to strive to become a shared space for growth, a place to learn, work, and build sustainable collaborative value.
