FEB UGM Master’s and Doctoral Students Get to Know UGM Library and Archives through the REACH Campus Tour

As students enter master’s and doctoral education, access to credible scholarly information becomes increasingly important. This was introduced to new students of the Master of Science and Doctoral Programs at the Faculty of Economics and Business, Universitas Gadjah Mada (FEB UGM), through a Campus Tour of UGM Library and Archives on Friday (August 14, 2026). The activity was part of the New Student Academic Orientation and the Researchers’ Enrichment Program (REACH) for the 2026/2027 Academic Year, organized by the Master of Science and Doctoral Programs at FEB UGM.

The session was led by Safirotu Khoir, Ph.D., Coordinator of Public Relations and International Affairs at UGM Library and Archives. During the session, participants were introduced to various facilities and services available at UGM Library and Archives. They were also invited to explore the library environment through a virtual tour.

In her presentation, Safirotu explained that libraries today are no longer simply places to read and look for books. Libraries have also adapted to the diverse needs of their users, including spaces for studying, discussion, individual work, and taking a break.

“Today, the library is not just a place to read and look for books. It also provides various spaces to meet users’ needs, such as discussion areas, spaces for individual study, places to relax, and even sports facilities,” said Safirotu.

The variety of facilities gives students the flexibility to choose spaces that suit their activities and needs. Discussion areas can be used to exchange ideas and collaborate, while individual spaces provide a more personal setting for reading, studying, or working on academic assignments.

The participants’ enthusiasm also showed that the needs of graduate students extend beyond access to collections and scholarly information. They also need spaces that can support various academic activities, from independent study to discussion and the exchange of ideas.

For graduate students, becoming familiar with library facilities and services is an important part of their academic journey. In addition to providing access to scholarly information, the library can serve as a space to develop ideas, foster academic interaction, and support research activities.

Through the visit, UGM Library and Archives sought to introduce the library as an open and flexible space that can be used according to users’ needs. For new students, the experience can serve as an initial step toward becoming more familiar with and making the most of the information resources and facilities available throughout their studies at UGM.

The activity also contributes to SDG 4: Quality Education by introducing information resources, services, and library facilities that support students’ education and research. It also aligns with SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals through collaboration between the Master of Science and Doctoral Programs at FEB UGM and UGM Library and Archives in supporting students’ academic needs.

Ultimately, a library is about more than books and shelves. It is a space to learn, discuss, discover ideas, and even take a break. Within these spaces, students’ academic journeys can find room to grow.
