Closing 38 Years of Service, Purman, S.E. Leaves a Legacy of Exemplary Dedication at the UGM Library and Archives

Long-standing dedication is not always visible at the front desk, but it is reflected in the tireless efforts that ensure every activity runs smoothly. For 38 years and 4 months, this commitment was embodied by Purman, S.E., Office Facilities and Infrastructure Manager at the Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) Library and Archives, who officially entered retirement effective July 1, 2026.

In recognition of his remarkable service, the UGM Library and Archives held a retirement ceremony on Tuesday, June 30, in the Seminar Room of the UGM Library and Archives. The event was attended by the Head of the UGM Library and Archives, division heads, and all staff members as a gesture of appreciation for his dedication and contributions over more than three decades.

The Head of the UGM Library and Archives, Arif Surachman, S.IP., MBA., described Purman as someone who was always responsive, helpful, and willing to work sincerely without expecting anything in return. According to him, Purman’s exemplary work ethic is a value that deserves to be passed on to all employees of the UGM Library and Archives.

“Mr. Purman is someone who is always ready to take action. Whatever needed to be done, he would respond quickly, quietly, and selflessly. This spirit of dedication is an example for all of us,” said Arif.

During the event, Purman also expressed his gratitude for his journey at Universitas Gadjah Mada. He said he felt blessed to have been part of the UGM Library and Archives family for 38 years and 4 months. For him, work becomes lighter when it is carried out with sincerity and regarded as an act of worship.

“I am grateful for the opportunity to serve UGM for 38 years and 4 months. I would like to thank the leadership and all my colleagues who have been part of my journey. The principle I have always upheld is to work sincerely and to regard every task as an act of worship. If we begin with that intention, God willing, everything becomes easier and brings blessings,” Purman remarked.

The event was filled with warmth and camaraderie as colleagues shared their memories and appreciation. Stories highlighting Purman’s discipline, sense of responsibility, and humility reflected the spirit of togetherness that has flourished within the UGM Library and Archives.

As the ceremony concluded, the UGM Library and Archives presented Purman with a commemorative token of appreciation in recognition of his 38 years and 4 months of dedicated service. The occasion ended with a group photo, marking the close of one chapter of service and the beginning of a new phase in his life.

A retirement ceremony is more than a formal farewell; it is an opportunity to honor the dedication of individuals who have helped build the institution. The success of library and archival services is the result of collaboration among all members, including those who work behind the scenes to ensure that facilities and infrastructure are always ready to support academic activities and public services.

This commitment aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, by providing a supportive environment for education, research, and community service, and SDG 16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, by strengthening professional, effective, and sustainable institutional governance.

Purman’s 38 years and 4 months of service serve as a reminder that every role plays an essential part in maintaining the quality of institutional services. Retirement is not the end of one’s contribution, but the beginning of a new chapter, leaving behind a legacy of dedication, integrity, and a spirit of service that will continue to inspire future generations.
