UGM Library and Archives Welcomes Hundreds of International Students through the PIONEER Program

The UGM Library and Archives took part in the Program for International Orientation and New-student Empowerment to Enhance Readiness (PIONEER), an orientation and induction program for hundreds of international students who will begin their studies in the first semester of the 2025/2026 academic year. The students are enrolled in various schemes, ranging from degree programs, student exchange, to non-degree programs. Organized by the UGM Directorate of Partnerships and Global Relations, the program was held on Friday (August 15) at the first floor of Grha Sabha Pramana (GSP).

This year, UGM welcomed international students from 54 countries across a wide range of study programs. Among them, 216 students are participating in student exchange programs, 49 students are enrolled in the Indonesian Language Program, 8 students are undertaking an intensive program, and 103 students are pursuing degree programs at the undergraduate, master’s, and doctoral levels.

In this event, Safirotu Khoir, Ph.D., Coordinator for Public Relations and International Affairs at the UGM Library and Archives, delivered a session titled Access to Library. The session provided a general overview of how to access and utilize the wide range of services and facilities offered by UGM’s libraries.

“The library is not just a place to find books, it’s also a comfortable space to lounge, relax, and socialize. From computers and co-working spaces to sports facilities, we provide everything to support an enjoyable learning and campus life experience,” said Safirotu Khoir.

The involvement of the UGM Library and Archives in PIONEER strengthens social networking and cross-cultural collaboration, helping international students adapt more quickly to campus life. This initiative aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4: Quality Education, through providing inclusive learning access, and SDG 17: Partnerships for the Goals, through fostering international collaboration in education.

With its active participation, the UGM Library and Archives ensures that PIONEER not only equips international students with technical knowledge but also builds a foundation of academic, cultural, and social readiness that will enrich their learning experience at UGM.
