UGM Library and Archives Promotes the Optimal Use of Oxford University Press Through a Workshop on Accessing Scholarly Resources and International Publishing

Access to high-quality academic journals and scholarly resources has become essential for the academic community in producing impactful research. However, access alone is not enough. The ability to effectively utilize scholarly resources and understand the international publishing process is key to ensuring that research findings reach a wider audience.

To support this goal, the UGM Library and Archives, in collaboration with Oxford University Press (OUP) and iGroup Asia Pacific, organized an online workshop entitled “Access Content and Publish in Oxford University Press: Strategies for Accessing Scholarly Resources and Publishing Opportunities in Oxford University Press Journals” on Thursday (June 11). The event featured Rohini Pillai from Oxford University Press as the speaker and Sururin Maudhunah from iGroup Asia Pacific as the moderator.

The workshop was attended by lecturers, students, and educational staff who sought to deepen their understanding of the scholarly resources available through Oxford University Press while gaining insights into publishing in reputable international journals.

In his opening remarks, Arif Surachman, S.IP., MBA., Head of the UGM Library and Archives, stated that Oxford University Press is one of the electronic resource providers subscribed to by UGM. Therefore, its utilization should continue to be enhanced to make a greater contribution to academic and research activities.

“Oxford University Press is one of the publishers whose resources are subscribed to by UGM. Therefore, we hope that our academic community will maximize the use of these resources to support learning, research, and scholarly publication,” said Arif.

According to him, libraries play an important role not only in providing access to scholarly information but also in guiding users to effectively discover, evaluate, and utilize information in order to produce high-quality academic work.

During the main session, Rohini Pillai introduced various resources available through the Oxford Academic platform and shared literature search strategies that can help researchers identify relevant references more efficiently and accurately. Participants were also introduced to a range of features that support the research process, from article discovery to citation tools and resources.

In addition to discussing access to scholarly content, Rohini explained publishing opportunities in journals published by Oxford University Press. The session covered manuscript submission procedures, journal selection strategies, and various publishing policies that authors need to understand before submitting their work.

“Understanding journal publishing policies is an essential step before submitting a manuscript. Authors need to ensure that their submissions meet ethical standards, journal requirements, and the applicable publisher policies,” Rohini explained.

This activity supports the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 (Quality Education) through the enhancement of information literacy and academic competencies, SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure) through strengthening the research ecosystem and dissemination of research outputs, and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals) through collaboration among the UGM Library and Archives, Oxford University Press, and iGroup Asia Pacific.

Amid increasing demands for international scholarly publication, the ability to access reliable information sources and understand the complexities of academic publishing has become increasingly important. Through this workshop, more members of the academic community are expected to maximize the resources available to them, produce high-quality research, and expand Indonesia’s scholarly contribution on the global stage.
