Toward Scopus Indexation, UGM’s BIP Journal Trains Editorial Team Through Intensive Workshop

As part of its preparation for Scopus indexation, the Berkala Ilmu Perpustakaan dan Informasi (BIP) Journal, managed by Perpustakaan dan Arsip Universitas Gadjah Mada, organized an intensive workshop to strengthen scholarly journal governance. The initiative is part of a strategic effort to enhance the quality of journal management and reinforce the international competitiveness of UGM’s academic publications.

The Berkala Ilmu Perpustakaan dan Informasi Journal is a nationally accredited scholarly journal that consistently publishes research articles, conceptual studies, and best practices in library science, information science, and archival studies. As a key platform for knowledge dissemination in these areas, BIP continues to improve its governance standards and scholarly impact to compete globally.

The workshop was held over three consecutive days, from Tuesday to Thursday (10–12 February 2026), as part of the UGM Journal Governance Support Program toward Scopus Indexation and Journal Quartile Improvement (EQUITY 2025/2026). Conducted in a hybrid format, the sessions took place onsite at the Meeting Room of the UGM Library and Archives Building L7, 2nd Floor, and online via Google Meet. Participants included editorial teams from journals published by the UGM Library and Archives, namely Berkala Ilmu Perpustakaan dan Informasi, Khasanah, and Media Informasi.

Editor-in-Chief of the BIP Journal, Sri Junandi, S.IP., emphasized that preparation for Scopus indexation requires long-term commitment and collective effort from journal managers. “International indexation cannot be achieved instantly. It demands consistency in maintaining article quality, orderly editorial processes, and a strong understanding of global publication standards,” he stated.

The first day of the workshop focused on strategies and technical aspects of journal management toward Scopus indexation. The sessions were delivered by Rozaqqa Noviandi, Ph.D., from the Journal of the Civil Engineering Forum, Faculty of Engineering UGM, and Dr. Ir. Mohammad Zainal Abidin, S.Pt., M.Biotech., IPM, from Buletin Peternakan UGM. Both speakers highlighted the importance of aligning journal scope, maintaining consistent editorial management, and adhering to international standards.

On the second day, participants were guided through a SWOT analysis of their journals and comparative assessments with journals already indexed in Scopus. Syahrul Fauzi, M.Pd., from the UGM Publishing and Publication Agency, encouraged journal managers to objectively map their journals’ positions as a foundation for development strategies and preparation of evaluation forms. “Understanding a journal’s strengths and challenges is a crucial foundation in the journey toward international indexation,” he explained.

Strengthening and supporting aspects of journal governance became the focus on the third day. Yogi Hartono, Head of Quality Assurance & Digital Asset Management at CNN Indonesia, underscored the importance of digital asset management in safeguarding the credibility and traceability of scholarly publications. Meanwhile, I Made Andi Arsana, a Geodesy lecturer at UGM and content creator, discussed the responsible use of journal social media as a supporting tool for scholarly dissemination.

The series of workshops aligns with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 4 on Quality Education through the strengthening of knowledge production and dissemination, and SDG 17 on Partnerships for the Goals through collaboration and academic networking. By enhancing editorial capacity and refining journal governance, the BIP Journal affirms its commitment to pursuing international indexation as part of a broader effort to expand its scholarly impact and global contribution.
